That error is from within your computer. If your video card supported 640x480 but the monitor didn't, then the game would run but you just wouldn't be able to see it running.

[I never thought I'd hear myself singing the praises of the ATI Rage II+ card, but here I go again...]
I had the same problem until I changed my video card to a Rage II+. I proclaim it to be the ArcadePC video card champ. It has shown every game I've tried so far, including that screwy Blasteroids resolution.
