it is good that the u3100 has a "terrible" dot pitch. it is this property that makes all the arcade games (except vector) look like the originals. i was amazed the first time i saw a neogeo game (kof98) on the u3100. it looked beutiful. this was without scanlines or any sort of interpolation or smoothing. compare that same output on a pc monitor and it looks quite pixelated and bad. using all the fancy filters and scanlines can decrease performance. for me the whole point of getting the u3100 was to get the arcade look. if i wanted a pretty hi-res picture i would have bought a cheap cracked out 19 or 21 inch pc monitor.. :-) so maybe i'm grasping at straws but i still think the u3100 holds its own. maybe i'm also trying to avoid my disapointment at having the "old" model as well... but i think my argument holds water.

p.s. also forget your fancy hagstrom keyboard encoders ;-) i went powerramp mite. if they work out it will be quite cheep. i have a single player panel hooked up to one so it is working now the true test will be if i can get my 2 player "hotrod se" button layout up and running. i will probablly have to add a stander 4 button gamepad into the mix but it should work. i know this is long but its 5:45 am and i've been playing the half-life mod counter-strike all night.
