If you want to do it without soldering:
a pair of wire crimpers - $3 to $5
Automatic wire stripers - $3 (optional but very handy!)
a Third Hand (tool)- $5 to $10 (optional but handy![pun unintended, but funny none the less!])
not a tool, but European style barrier strips from Radio Shack are great, buy several of them
