What wire to use?

Hey everyone. I've asked this before but I don't think I ever got an answer. My question is what kind of wire should I use to wire up my encoder to my fingerboard? Basically, what gauge (or awg whatever that means)? Someone said they used a SCSI ribbon cable for theirs which sounded like a good idea. What do you all think?
