Yes you can. It might not fit on the screen exactly the way you want (sometimes its smaller)
but it will work. I have done it and it works.

As for how it works... im not exacly sure... it's like it displays the even lines then the odd lines real fast so it seems like a full picture or something. I saw it on the net somewhere... if i can find it i will post the information.

: Can you do 640 x 480 mode on an arcade monitor?

: : Are you talking about on a arcade monitor?
: : It works on a PC monitor but not on an arcade monitor. At least thats what I was told. I am using the -monitor arcade switches and 16-bit will not work unless i use 640x480 mode.

: :
: : : : Actually I have this problem too... I am using ArcadeOS as my frontend with MAME. It is the 16 bit color games that are a problem. I talked to Brian Lewis (autor of arcadeOS)about this and he said that on the arcade monitor 16-bit is only supported in 640x480 res. So either try it in 640x480 mode or try changing it to 8-bit and see if that helps.

: : : I'm not sure that's the prob because earlier versions of mame (prior to the -monitor arcade command) run 16-bit colour games fine. I've tried and tested it with mame 0.35, works just fine.
