have to disagree here. I converted a perfectly good Asteroids cabinet into my Mame cab. I purchased a 21" SVGA Sony monitor for it. From the front, the only way you would be able to tell is because the cardboard monitor overlay is rounded for an old TV screen instead of a flat computer monitor. But other than that, they are the exact same size so it's a perfect fit.

The reason I didn't use an arcade monitor or a TV with a TV out card is, I wanted the higher resolution for PC games I also play on it... e.g. MK3, the Doom series, Daytona USA, various other racing games, and an endless supply of pc based games. You just can't beat a 21" SVGA monitor for sharpness. On strictly a MAME cabinet it's a whole lot of overkill and not worth the 1400 bucks I spent on it.

Each to their own I guess...
