Pausing With MS Sidewinder

I was going do the sidewinder hack. After using the regular pad for awhile, I noticed a few problems. When using Mame32, and playing games like Tempest, and Galaxian clones just to name a few, I've experience a pause in movement when firing. This does not happen with the keyboard. Any ideas???

Also as a sidenote, the control is sloppy on certain games, is a lot better control with the arcade joystick wired in?
