Yes
In quite a few old games, asteroids, old atari games, gauntlet 1 +2 and others The player one and two start buttons would flash when you had inserted enough coins to start the game. MAME simulates this function with the keyboard LED's.
So yes mame does "fiddle" with the keyboard LED's but if you don't play games where this function is supported then its probably not worth your time.
on a related note does anyone have a list of the games that DO support flashing LEDs? there must be one somewhere but I sure can't find it.
