I'm planning on doing the same thing. There exist small relays in DIP packages that will do this--many of them are basically an LED coupled with an optically triggered transistor. This is perfect for tapping the LED signals from the keyboard.
You can get them through Newark www.newark.com or other electronics vendors. Currently, the Newark search is down, or I'd look one up for you.
