First or second generation anything tends to use better quality parts than higher generations. The reason for this is that manufacturers learn which parts they can skimp on (and add to that the fact that electronics are supposed to get cheaper each gen.).

examples:
I have a Toploading VCR that has seen the deaths of 3 frontloading VCRs.
I have a working IBM PC circa 1983, and a dead Pentium system.

I haven't hacked one myself, but from what I hear Microsoft's USB keyboard is the way to go. (most of MS's [relabeled] hardware is quite easy to hack)
