Keyboard hack walkthrough?

I very much want my second project to be a USB keyboard hack. But, I've been hearing so much talk about ghosting problems and even worse POWER problems with LED's etc. Does anyone have a SURE-FIRE method of hacking a USB keyboard from start to finish. Including the type of keyboard used (one that is found in MANY stores and easily obtainable), the matrix used, the way to safely avoid LED and POWER problems, avoiding ghosting problems, etc. It sounds like a keyboard hack is THE way to go especially a USB one, but it just sounds so risky. I would much prefer following in the footsteps of someone who's already built exactly the kind of controls I want, with no problems. Anyone got a walkthrough? Thanks very much.
