Right now they're on 1 3/4" centers going sideways, and 2" centers going up and down. You think that's too much space? I picked up the spacing from a scan of the MK button layout which I found on the net. I copied the measurements exactly, but there were 5 buttons layed out in a 2-1-2 layout, whereas mine is the 2-2-2 layout. The measurements on the MK layout had the sideways spacing 1 5/8" so I increased it to 1 3/4" to compensate for the extra button.
