I went with a full sized cabinet because I wasn't sure where else I could sit a four foot long control panel. :)
I did my cabinet first, which I think is not the most common way. The reason I did this was I knew that:
1) If I did the c/p first I would never stop playing long enough to finish the rest, and...
2) It gave me extra time to condsider my layout and believe me, it changed many times.
I think by not rushing to do the part I wanted most (the control panel) I was able to do a better job on the rest of the project. This way the only thing you really need to know about the c/p to start your project is basic dimesions.
I think this method works well, but it takes extra willpower. :)
