A joystick would not be a good choice to make a spinner. The reason? A Joystick has finite endpoints...once you move the stick to the left, you can't go left anymore for example. IF you used this in tempest you would only be able to go counter clockwise so far.

Either make it like the Twystygrip, or use the guts from the Happs spinner. Its your best bet.
