: Umm....I have to totally disagree on that one. I have owned an actual tempest machine and using a joystick sucks. I have used spinners that I built using mice guts and custom ones using a Happ trackball encoder and both perform much like the original. Tempest is my favorite game of all time and if I had to use a joystick to play it I would never touch it.

When I was at CGE, in August, Walter Day, and his crew from Twin Galaxies was there, and after testing my setup, the Arcade 2000 with the Twistygrip spinner, they decided to hold a Tempest-Arcade contest on it, saying that it was a "viable tempest controller".

PS, the twistygrip people were put through the ringer by a professional (I forget his name at the moment) who supervised the manufacture of their mouse guts spinners, so that they were 99.5 percent accurate for Tempest.

It was designed specifically with tempest as a model.
