LEDs from a keyboard circuit to coin doors?

I hope my LED q's aren't getting annoying to people. :>
Has anyone successfully ever wired LEDs from a keyboard circuit to coin doors? my door should be coming soon, and I know I can get it to light up by other means (like the power supp.) but I wonder if I could route the LEDs in (not sure, I think the coin doors are 5 volts like the LEDs?)

Also, Trying to reproduce a caps lock keypress is causing a power overload... my computer survived it's electroshock therapy, but I am wondering if:

1.) it's safe to continue this way in testing the matrix

and

2.) why after I traced the keys on the mylar and they matched up, that the keypress would surge the way it did?
