Joypad PCB -> Pushbutton Connections

I just finished making my SNES to PC joystick adapter to prepare for my next project, a totally luxurious arcade stick. I have all the parts on order. What I'll be doing is gutting a PSX pad and use its PCB for my stick. I have almost no experience with electrical stuff apart from soldering here and there, so my question is:

When I wire a button (or any switch) to the pad, is it true that I'll have to solder the ground onto the trace on one side of one of those little patches that make up the contact, and the hot connector to the other side? Does it matter which goes where? I suppose that all I'll be doing is close the circuit, and that's exactly what the little disc inside the plastic cups in the joypad buttons did before, right? Now if I solder gnd left and hot right, that should also close the circuit (provided I solder to the NO position), correct?

Sorry for asking beginner questions, but there is so much info on this site that you can search for hours, find a ton of great tips but still not know the answers to your most burning questions =)
