Wiring PCB Questions

Just a couple of quick questions:

1) Is there a difference of what type of wire we use to hook up the PCB to the terminal blocks and from the terminal blocks to the controls? For example solid vs threaded wire, copper versus silver color wire??? I'm currently using 22 (GAGE) AWG solid copper wire(I got this wire from left over telephone cabling) Its also used in home alarm systems.

2) Does ground have to be used? And where would it be hooked up? I'm using a standard keyboard PCB for my system.

3) What type of diodes do I need to purchase? Is there a specific type or model? I'm going to go to Radio Shack to purchase them, what do I ask the guy for?
