Since MAME is completely configurable now, I use the 7th button not only for some games (i.e., as a throttle), but also to make changes in the Config Menu. This way I don't need a keyboard for anything while in MAME. But the seventh button is definitely not necessary, since as I far as I know no game uses more than 6 buttons......
