Yeah, I've had that problem. For me, only the official standard (not analogue) Sony pad works well. And not a Dual Shock one, either. I suggest that you should get an old-fashioned standard Sony pad. But I haven't seen them in shops for a while (in the UK at least). I ended up having to swap games for a PS pad from my mate. I've got what I think is the same cord (it came in a cheap-looking box, and it's called a PC DIRPAD or something), and I use the joystick I made from a PS pad with MAME in DOS without any troubles. Hope this helps.
