Dude, I've been in the trades (Plumbing HVAC, Electric and carpentry) since I was a pre-teen too. If the pilot bit is even slightly bent then you've got the delicate touch of a gorilla. Then again, instead of spending $15-$20 on a Lennox or Greenlee spade bit, you could spend $10-$12 on a good DeWalt hole saw.

: : You obviously haven't used a hole saw. Hole saws have a mandrel that makes them extremely accurate. Once the pilot bit from the mandrel dents the material, you can make a 1.125" hole blindfolded with your are tied behind your back.

Hole saws are not that accurate unless maybe you are using a drill press (then they are ok).....if the pilot bit is even slightly bent your hole will be oversized or off-centered. If you have a row of holes and the are not perfectly alligned the project looks like shit. I dont reccommend them if you are as particular about your work as I am.

: : : You need a 1 1/8" bit. You can get a spade bit for a few bucks but if you want a much better one get a woodeater. It is like a spade bit but mmmuuuuuucccchhh better. But they are not cheap....probably around $15-20 for a good namebrand like Lennox or Greenlee. Avoid holesaw bits as they will not be as accurate.
