Fine-tuning sticks: metal vs. cherry

1. I recently purchased a Mass Systems stick for my Playstation which uses the Happ Ultimate joystick. At first I was happy to have that arcade feel but now I notice the stick is not as accurate and it seems to be very sensitive in certain directions. I opened it up and noticed that the 8-way actuator was too close to one side of the switches (see illustration). Instead of adding electrical tape to the side with the gap I would like to sand off the side that is too close. (I don't like it when the slightest pressure registers a movement.)
Does this seem like a good idea or is there another solution? If I would proceed with this, how would I properly remove the actuator?
I am very new to this, so I thank you for any help.

2. Because of this type of stick, I am now considering using the Happ Super joystick when I build my own controls because it has metal switches. I read in a newsgroup that you could fine-tune the switches by simply bending the switches in or out. I would need a very precise stick since I play a lot of fighting games which utilize quick diagonals.
Anyone have advice on this?
