I've used two different kinds. On my first panel I used all particle board, which worked out well. On my new panel I used oak plyood for the sides of the base and for the panels and for the bottom of the base I used particle board. The tricky part about this wood is that you have to be careful when you cut it so you don't chip off the oak vanear on either side so it still looks good after you cut it. Other than that it's pretty easy to work with too. Looks nicer than particle board but is more expensive. All the wood was 3/4" thick except my base which was 1/2" thick to keep the weight down a little.
