PS/2 vs. serial mouse (i.e. Happ trackball encoder vs. KE-72)

Hello gang,

I did some experiments comparing PS/2 and serial mice, and I wanted to see if other people see the same behaviour.

I'm running the DOS version of MAME under DR-DOS 7.03 with the DR-DOS mouse driver. I've noticed that a PS/2 mouse causes frame rates to drop when moved rapidly. I ran Centipede and I noticed the FPS drop from 60 to 50 or even 40 if I move the mouse around a bunch. Now, if I do the same with a serial mouse, I do not have this problem. Can anyone else confirm these results?

Do PS/2 mice require more processing overhead? Is it just DOS? Is it the mouse driver?

I'm trying to decide between the Happ trackball encoder and the KE-72. Given my results I'm going to spend the extra $$ for the Happ.

-Dave
