hey,

i just put together a cheap cabinet a few weeks ago
and added the spinner today.

i went to the local arcade shop and picked up a
spinner assembly from some game.. don't think it was
tron since the guy (Al) said that the tron ones made
some sort of noise... it's not from a tempest machine
since those had some sort of plastic bushing (or so
says http://members.home.net/chumblespuzz/forsale/spinnerkit/spinnerkit.htms )

arkanoid maybe?

this was just the metal parts (a box, the dial,
flywheel and toothed wheel) and he charged me $10
(and he still has a few in a box). I'm sure that
other people have these, i imagine that as the
electronic parts broke people just put the metal
parts in a bin.

on the way back home i picked up a cheap mouse and
some circuit board.

opened the mouse, wired the right-left sensors to the
circuit board, attached the board to the spinner box.
may have gotten lucky w/ the tooth spacing, very hard
to tell if they are alike since the mouse wheel is <1
inch across and the spinner is the width of a
joystick base.

<2 hour later i had a spinner (and for less than $17)

i took some pictures, if anyone is interested i'll put
up a web page later this week (need to get them
scanned)

it feels really good: smooth, heavy, very solid
(attached to the panel by 4 bolts, not quite the
same hole pattern as a joystick, but close) and has
a nice flywheel.

now for my tempest question:

How many turns of the spinner does it take to get
around the first level (the circle)? I'd like to
get my box to be as close to the real thing as
possible

thanks, and i'd like to thank everyone who has
contributed to this message board and put up sites.
couldn't have done it w/o you guys
