Did some testing. Celeron DEFINITELY kicks the crap out of the K6-2 in Mame. Here's the test setup.

1. Celeron 450, 128MB RAM, normal Win98SE install

2. K6-2 400, 64MB RAM, Stripped down Win98 install.

Tested 2 games, Blazing Star and Great 1000 Miles Rally. Ran with frameskip set to AUTO in Mame. Both games stayed at zero frameskip on the Celeron 99% of the time, on the K6-2, they were hardly ever at zero...Don't think I saw less than 2 or 3 with Great 1000 Miles Rally running on it.

The test setup was much more optimized for the K6-2...it had NOTHING running except Mame, I had run ROM2 after installing Windows on that machine, so IE and most of the other utilities were removed. The Celeron was online, had web browsers open, ICQ running and distributed.net client in operation during the test.

The 128k onboard cache of the K6-3 might bring it up to speed with the Celeron, but without knowing one way or the other, it looks like I'll be buying another Celery.

Any comments?

Dennis

: Need to know what type of CPU works best for Mame. Am considering K6-2 450 or K6-3 450 currently. Do the AMD's perform any better/worse than a Celeron? How about any differences between the K6-2/3?

: Would prefer to go K6-2/3 instead of Celeron because the motherboards/processors are cheaper.

: Thanks,

: Dennis
