It took me a while to figure this one out. The actuator is that hourglass-looking piece. From bottom to top, it goes: little metal C-clip, then the actuator. If the fatter end of the actuator is up, it'll be in 8-way mode. The theory behind this is that with the wider surface, you'll be able to hit two switches (ie. up and right), and you'll get your diagonal that way. The the narrower surface, you won't be able to hit them as easily, so that would be in 4-way.

It would be, however, a royal pain in the butt to have to change it on the fly. I just have two Super-8s in my cabinet in 8-way mode, and they feel fine to me. There is always the chance of having poor little Frogger jump right when you meant up, but it's really not THAT bad. My suggestion (if you have the time) would be to just make a quick dummy control panel with one or two sticks in 8-way mode (and a couple of buttons), and give it a test-drive. If you don't have to time to do that, then I would recommend that you leave the sticks as 8-ways. Games like Robotron and Sinistar will be nearly impossible with 4-way sticks.

Hope this helps!
