Number of buttons used in games

Is there one central source for the number of buttons each game uses?
I'm not interested in fighting games (I will probably hack a dreamcast
controller to connect Soul Calibur to my cabinet) so I don't
need the 6 buttons for Street Fighter. But what about other games? I will want to play games like the Simpsons or other multiplayer games.
Can I get away with only 3 buttons per player? Do I need to go through each game one by one to figure this out?
Any thoughts?
