Go to your local hardware store and buy a continuity tester. They are cheap. You don't need a multimeter if you only want to test the wires and not read voltages (Although a multimeter is a good investment for your toolbox). Put one end of the continuity tester on one wire then touch all the other wires till the thing lights up or beeps. Mark the wires every time it beeps. Continue till you have identified all the wires you need to identify. No power is required and depending upon the tester and the voltage.. power may actually screw up your readings. That is as simple as you can make it :)

Hope this helps,

: I am looking at hooking up a PSX in my cab. A post
: below mentions lopping off a certain cable for use,
: but the thing is that the wires are not color
: coded, thus using a multimeter to find which wire
: goes to which pin. I really do not know anything
: about this instrument, nor do I want to read a book
: on how it works. I just want to know how I go about
: using it for the task I mentioned above. Is there a
: certain cheap brand or local place I could pick one
: up? Again I will just be using it to make sure I have
: the correct wire to pin. Any suggestions or how-to?
: Thanks
