I tried diodes not too extensively...just at four contacts..still jammed...But matt is right there is no need for an encoder...I have a cabinet with 2 8-way joy's... six buttons per player, 2 coin and 2 start... with room for more, You can let (up an down) mess with eachother, and (left and Right) and I made the extra buttons for player one only mess with player one... because you arent going to be pressing your sixth button at the same time as you bend down to press the coin return(wired up to coin button)...
