Just for referemce, what a continuity tester does is supply a low power electrical signal along one of the wires going to the tester. When you touch the other probe to the wire that has this signall running through it, you close the circuit and the multimeter beeps/flashes/buzzs/whatever. Thats why you can use a simple batery/lightbulb as a continuity tester. Just wire the ground from the batery to the bulb, then put the positive current on your set of cables and touch the bulb to the other end. When you hit the right one, the bulb lights up.

Nice huh?
