i think the feature you are looking for is a continuity checker. i am more of a software geek than a hardware geek so i'm not certain. what this does is put the multimeter into a mode where when you touch the two prongs to a wire or anything else that lets current flow it will beep when a connection is made. you would test the wires by holding one end to the exposed wire and then probing the other end until it beeps. when it does you have found the match. :-) i'm sure someone else will be more specific. as for brand i'm not sure if the cheap ones have the audible continuity or conductivity? test. good luck...
