Since alot of the early hacks were smaller (around 9 inputs?), this may be where diodes were working, and hence the ongoing assumption that diodes will solve ghosting no matter what the size.

: Please note, I am not an electrical engineer. Although I do have around 9 college credit hours in electronics (including DC fundamentals).
