The NES light gun is like any light gun in that it's just a light detector. Maybe the only reason the screen blanks out and the gun 'looks' for a big white square is becuse the games are coded that way. It might not be a gun hardware limitation at all, but rather an NES limitation (not knowing where the beam is) or just lazy coders. The oscilloscope test is really needed to see what the gun is doing.
