I've found several programs that work very well in making the joystick send keystrokes. Here they are in order of preference:

JoyToKey

RBJoy
http://www.rbsoft.de

Joystick Control Center (JoyCC)

These are all Windows native programs. The DOS ones (not listed) do not work under Windows very well.

The one "problem" with these is they ALL use DirectInput, so any program that also uses DirectInput suspends them while they run. If you use a non-directinput game/emulator, or ones where you can disable it, these will work great.

So for instance Mame works fine, Nebula does not (anyone know how to disable DI in Nebula?) etc. I personally like using the Joy/Key mode instead of true joystick mode because it allows you to map other keys like ESC, function keys (for save states etc) to the joystick. Very useful.

: Hey folks,

: Got an interesting request, wondering if anything like this exists.

: I'm looking for a Win9x joystick driver (installed under game controllers) that looks like a joystick to Win9x, but instead is just a front for a keyboard interface. You can then map up, down, left, right, and 8 or so buttons on the stick to different keys on the keyboard.

: Why do I need this? Well, some games I'm putting into my cabinet are PC Win98 games, and only allow for one keyboard player and one joystick player. For head to head play, I'd need to have a simulated joystick installed that was just mapped to keys. If a driver like this exists, I'm set. I set one player to keyboard, another to joystick (just setting the virtual joystick to the keys I need for my second hotrod stick).

: Anyone think this is possible this way or any other way?

: Thanks,

: Brad
