: Andy's Lightgun theory..

: Tom about you serial comment, that was a bit strange, its not that we are going to shove loads of information down the line, at most 1200bps..

: This is pure speculation, this is what I presume is required to interface a lightgun to a PC.

: Most lightguns (all I researched) need +5V serial is +12V (that is why we need the +5 power source for the Happs control trackball interface, PS/2 is 5v) so we need to use external power sources (off course if you have a Arcade Power supply or PC supply you'd get your +5V/0V from that).

: Another thing is the way lightguns work is to flood the screen on 60/50hz (60fps) refresh (I believe that Monitors work differently, so it will only work on Arcade Monitors/TVs I might be wrong). The gun driver needs to be polled 60/50 times per second..

I believe you are correct about the optics needed to be a TV type. I've heard several ideas on how guns work, the one I linked to is the fill screen, I don't think that's how it really works. I have a gun for PSX that has a 20 per second rapid fire, and even observing, no flash or flicker can be seen. I go with the idea that guns work the same as light pens, measuring the decay of the current pixel/group of pixels to tell where it's pointed. So why do some games flash? If the game shows alot of 100% black(a good number of gun games do) there are multiple spots that would read the same, because 100% Black has no decay(it wasn't drawn, so the dimmness can't be measured). So, quite a bit of data might need to be sent, I'm going to hook one up to an O'Scope and see.

So, why did I link to that site? The first post I responded to was asking about Happ guns, I pointed to that site to show that Happ guns work the same as PSX guns talked about in that post.
Your post inquired about Leathal Enforcers, that site has a good bit about it.

: Light guns will not work on any TV that scan coverts the video signal. (hence them not working on PC monitors, the lightguns that work on PC monitors use a different sensor type).

: Theory connecting the wires..

: Here is the wiring from Lethal Enforces light gun (Arcade version)

: 4 | +5v
: 3 | Trigger
: 2 | GND
: 1 | Optic sensor

: Hooking these wires to what comes from a 9pin serial port.. Well we can't use the 12v voltage, so we will use the Ground and +5v from the power supply unit..

Why? A parrallel port outputs 5V, and has plenty of inputs for the trigger, start and other buttons on the gun. Plus, according to the previous post, Mame already supports it via parrallel.

: Also lightgun is different to the mouse in the fact it screen position can change radically (top left to bottom right)..

However the mouse driver is compatable with tablets, and hence is not limited to linear movement, 'cause you can place pen anywhere. I'm not positive it does this telling the driver that "the mouse just moved really fast over there", or that "I'm here now" is what the tablet-to-mouse driver says. Anyway, it works.

: Well thats my view at the moment..

: Sorry if I made any mistakes, kinda of tired..

I'm tired too, you guys post late!

: Please feel free to input.

I think I just maxed out the message!
