The whole bottom assembly comes off pretty easily. It is just one wierd screw-like thingy that you will need a small allen wrench to undo. There are two of them on the white piece of plastic tha t holds the bottom portion onto the metal shaft, but you only need to loosen the one closest to the joystick knob. It really is not very difficult, and this will allow you to use the standard 1 1/8" hole. Getting the screw back in is a little tricky, but not overly difficult. I really advise against drilling a huge hole, since it is not necessary. If you need more help feel free to mail me. I could even call you to talk you through the process, if it comes down to that, but I think if you just look at it carefully, you'll see how it comes apart.
