I know this isn't strictly related to building controls... I just wanted to pass along this tip (in case you didn't know about it already):
Set GAMMA = 2 (default is normally 1) when running vector games. I'm getting beautiful results on my standard res arcade monitor. Bright and crisp. Previously, I tried using BEAM = 2, but the picture wasn't nearly as sharp and it was still too dark.
And I'm using the wainterlace option, too.
