I had thought that if I were to do interchangeable control panels (I'm not--at least on this cabinet), I would put magnetic "proximity" switches along the edge of each CP. Each control panel would have a different combination, and could be uniquely sensed without plugging in any connectors. Four switch locations would give you sixteen possible combinations.
Of course, if you're already using a molex for your CP wires, then you might as well use a few pins for sense codes as well...
