It adds a few things. Mouse control for front ends which is nice. That also lets you play more pc games if you so desire (like black and white).
But the main reason, is that an 8 way joystick doesn't even come close to controlling an analog control like a trackball.
trackballs have speed associated with them. a Joystick is up or not up. up/left or not. Trackballs you can move an every direction, at different speeds.
