I'm planning on using the same approach to make interchangeable pad hacks and keyboard encoders for my arcade controller.

I've made a couple of console gamepad printer port adapters for Directpad Pro. It is fairly easy to solder 22GA stranded wire to a DB25 connector.

1) Solder connections toward the middle of the connector first and work outward. This makes it so that you can keep your soldering iron from melting connections to other wires that you've soldered to the connector.

2) Twist the stripped end of the 22GA wire so that there are no stray strands. Tin the wire with solder -- I use a low wattage solding iron with a small conical tip. Push the tinned wire into the DB25 connector (it should fit perfectly). Melt the solder.

I hope this helps :)
