Well, I like ingenuity... so if you can do it, and have it work well, then cool... But...

The problem lies in that most Comp usa joys are analouge. If you grab these shafts, they will Not turn at all because they are hooked into pots.

I had thought about taking a Happ 8 way arcade stick and somehow making the shaft longer (via glue and another piece of metal piping) and attaching an optical or pot tracking unit to it.

The thing that you have to remember, is that the opto tracking unit will have to be mounted Only to the joy shaft and or base using a slide mount, because the entire shaft will move at angles. (look closly at the happ diagrams)

If it was mounted to the control panel in a stationary way, it would break off the minute you pressed any direction.

Your best bet is the Happ 8 way joystick. Its very affordable, excellent quality, and its shaft can freely spin.
