I find the sound quality to be just fine, and I've run DAMP via AOS under both Win98 and WinME. I've also used a few different sound cards, an AWE32, and an integrated audio (SB compatible card) with my newer system. No problems either way.
I'm not sure what I would suggest you adjust, but I would think that your setup should work.
