Cheating? Puh-leeze! Let's see, what's makes more sense: picking up an old cabinet (sometimes with a control panel and monitor included) for next to nothing, or spending just as much to build a cabinet from scratch? It's not like your doing the world a favor by "preserving" an old wooden box. I agree that converting a classic is a very bad idea, but the vast majority of existing cabinets are just taking up space in some warehouse, and a lot will just end up being destroyed.
If you're happy with your home-built cabinet, good for you. And if this guy can't find a single used cabinet in a city the size of Toronto, he's not looking the the right place. But please don't start singling out any one way of building a MAME machine as the RIGHT way.
