After much much research, I finally found a link to a project that MIGHT allow direct connection of NES controllers to keyboard encoders. The link was too close to home, damnit. I found it on this website. Go here:

The plans for the connection to Atari is what you want, since the hardware decodes the signal direct to Atari, and Atari has pins specifically for "UP" "DOWN" etc. So if you connect the right pins to the right keys on the keyboard, we can have the ultimate universal solution for NES gamepads on PCs. Would someone with a keyboard encoder try this project? I don't have one, and I'm dying to try it out. Just think, we could expand on this and make an SNES decoder as well...it shouldn't be that hard, as SNES only has an extra 4021 CMOS chip on it. We can also easily connect Atari joysticks directly to encoders.
