How did you connect the NES and SNES pads?

Did you cut the ends off of the gamepads and wire them to your diodes and DB-25 connector? It's easy to find Genesis, Playstation, and Saturn gamepad extension cords so you don't have permanently attach the gamepad. I haven't tried NES and SNES yet because I'd rather not cut the connector off of the gamepads.
