i don't think a gamepad hack is going to be much more or less difficult than a keyboard hack.
you only need to map out the keys you want to use. if you're doing just the basic movements for a single player, you're not going to get into too much trouble no matter which keys you pick.
you only get blocking when you press several several keys at the same time.
if your two player buttons are ctrl and alt, and your movements are the arrows, it will probably be ok. the only combinations that *might* give you trouble would be both fire buttons and a diagonal on the joystick.
