You need 1-1/8" bit, but a bit that big it costs $50 and won't fit in a handheld drill. Even a drill press would need a Jabcob's superchuck. The other 2 options are:

1) Use a hole saw (Pictured) (About $10)

or

2) Draw a 1-1/8" circle and drill a bunch of small, close-together holes on the circle.
