Consider not using a keyboard to hack.. Go with an encoder or a joystick with extra buttons hack. Why? Ghosting. That is when you press 2 buttons and a 3rd one appears to be pushed. I dont know of a standard keyboard that doesn't have some kind of ghosting. Some people have got theirs to work with up to 3 buttons pressed without sideeffects, but only after playing around with what buttons to hook up. There is adding diodes.. but after a bit, it doesnt seem worth it.
Anyway.. small is ok. I ripped apart some cat5 network cables for mine and it works great. Not a lot of current going throught so it doesn't matter that much.
