The instructions on the diagram refer to the end connected to the controller (not the console side).

I went ahead and tried what I thought they meant. They were talking about the end from the controller in the instructions to identify pin 1 on the Saturn controller. I built the adapter and tried it with a regular Saturn controller and it worked great.
